Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) and genetic test

Since June 2004, I made take the DNA of all my dogs and numerous dogs which I used in reproduction (as well as their ascendants and them collateral when it is possible); I have to be in ownership of more than 60 samples of DNA today and I participated financially in the takings of numerous dogs which did not belong to me but that I used for my program of breeding.

It was very expensive to me (count between 35 and 45 euro by test according to periods, more the necessity of updating certain samples when the international standard changed!) a "library" of samples of DNA is more 4 000 euro to establish me.

 Why?

Certainly not "to certify" my pedigrees: when I make a "marriage", I assure you that I know who is the father and who is the mother and I do not need a "label" or a certificate " of morality "!

But, for a long time, I say to myself that the genetic research is a good tool for the breeder and when the veterinary science will discover a test allowing to mark the carriers of a disease with transmission of autosomal recessive type, I shall have then the best base to estimate my lineages.

Since a few months, we have a tool of this type chap as regards the primary lens Luxation, (PLL). I am thus capable today of going back up in the whole of my pedigrees to look for if the disease would not have walked in a hidden recessive way in my selection the first results allow me to declare that this day my whole livestock is healthy, unhurt of the disease and the not carrier of the gene mutating (in expectation still results of the lineage of Radiance Remi of the Hunters Pride)..

The primary luxation (PLL) is a terrible hereditary eye disease the symptoms of which appear late (mainly between 3 and 8 years). The slackening or the detachment of ligaments suspensors lead to the dislocation of the lens which can provoke a glaucoma and an oedema of the cornea. If it is not quickly handled, the glaucoma can pull hurts of the optical nerve and provoke a blindness.

Imagine the damages when dogs which will declare the disease or which are carriers reproduced (a stud dog can make it projections to 3 years even 8 years!) and the confusion of the breeder one so much is little conscientious.
